Haunted by silence, a mute teenage girl is mysteriously given back her voice ... and it is divine.
Rendered mute at birth, Portia Griffin has been silent for 16 years. Music is her constant companion, along with Felix, her deaf best friend who couldn’t care less whether or not she can speak. If only he were as nonchalant about her newfound interest in the musically gifted Max Hunter.
But Portia’s silence is about to be broken with the abrupt discovery of her voice, unparalleled in its purity and the power it affords to control those around her. Able to persuade, seduce and destroy using only her voice, Portia embarks on a search for answers about who she really is, and what she is destined to become.
Inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, SILENT ECHO: A Siren's Tale is an epic story filled with fantasy, romance and original music.

About the Author
Raised in rural Monsey, New York, Elisa spent her days reading whatever crossed her path and developing a keen appreciation for the ever-present music in her home – from classical to rock.

After her college years at Boston University, Elisa continued her creative pursuits, working as a junior VP of Marketing at a corporate graphic design agency and, later, as an interior decorator. Eventually, Elisa left the workforce to raise her family, in her now hometown of Englewood, NJ.

When Elisa is not writing, her creative outlets still abound. She is fierce with a set of knitting needles, a hot glue gun and any ingredients that can somehow be fashioned into a sinful and highly caloric babka.

Silent Echo: A Siren's Tale was an interesting read. I thoroughly enjoyed the mix of modern and mythology worlds, and the use of poetry within this novel was thoroughly enjoyable. I have never read another story similar to this!

The beginning of Silent Echo starts with the strange happenings around Portia's birth which teases you as to what is going to be discovered throughout the book. I'm new to Siren's myself and although I'd heard some 'tales' about Siren's being mermaids that lured sailors to their deaths, I really liked the spin on Sirens within Silent Echo as they are bird-related which actually went well with the concept of the Sirens singing beautiful bird-like songs.

The use of song lyrics and poetry in this novel was also welcoming, I haven't read a story involving this element before and I liked to read it aloud and create the poetic rhythm. The Bust-a-move poem/song lyrics mash-up was probably my favourite :-)

My favourite element in this book was the mythology/historic. I'm not a mythology buff so I can't comment on whether it is 'in-keeping' with most sources but for a YA read, I thought it was approached and used well and didn't come across as modernised or overly-simplified for the YA age group. The use of olden English language also helped portray the mythology and historical element well.

Although I did mostly enjoy this story, at certain points I did find the story slow but this was often during the present day chapters and I could possibly contribute this to my enjoyment being more focused on the mythology aspects. I also felt that I didn't warm to the characters in this story and I didn't  certainly didn't feel any strong feelings towards Portia and Max's relationship. I grew to like Felix, Portia's best friend, near the end of the story but I still wouldn't say I was routing for him to win Portia's affections.

Overall this story was an enjoyable read and the ending has left this story open for an interesting sequel, if considered. I do however also think the ending would make a great open ending for this book if it is a stand-alone novel.

Booktuber Interview with Jamie-Leigh from jhaughn18 (Interview #4)

Hello again and welcome back to Cold Tea and Crumbs.

It's Wednesday again and I have another Blogger/BookTuber Interview for you. This time around I would like to introduce you to Jamie-Leigh from jhaughn18 (Ermahgerd Berks). Jamie-Leigh is one of the funniest BookTubers I've come across and the videos with both her boyfriend and her have me in stitches! Here are Jamie-Leigh's answers to my questions and don't forget to check out her channel and say I sent you!

Hi Jamie-Leigh, please describe your channel and the type of books which you enjoy reading.

My channel is all about books! I focus mainly on Tag videos and wrap ups and I always have book hauls! My boyfriend Jeff and I are always on the hunt for books in used book stores and we each have book buying problems so there is never a shortage of hauls! I personally enjoy reading YA novels, I would have to say my favorite genres are Fantasy and Dystopian, but really I will read pretty much anything! Jeff focuses on adult fiction, his favourite being fantasy!

What made you decide to start your channel and what are the main reasons you keep making videos?
After finishing up 6 years of university and only having time to read textbooks and research papers it was like a breath of fresh air to get back into reading books that I enjoyed. I was so out of the loop about knowing what books were popular and had good reviews so I turned to booktubers to give me the updates. After I started reading more I really wanted to start making videos of my own, because I quite enjoy talking. I continue to make the videos because I have fun doing them! The booktube community is so amazing and I have come to know so many people and have made friends from all over the world, fantastic people I never would have had the opportunity to get to know if it weren’t for booktube.

What is your favourite book?
I have a few favourites, I can never choose one of anything! I love The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, Divergent by Veronica Roth, and Before I Go To Sleep by S.J. Watson. I suppose those would be my favourites if I had to narrow it down! I love the worlds in both the Hunger Games and Divergent, both books are so captivating and have just the right amount of romance, they both feature a strong female lead and the stories had me hooked from the beginning. Before I Go To Sleep is just so intense and different from the books I typically read, it kept me on edge, it was interesting and really just wonderful.

If you could read one genre for the rest of your life, which genre would you choose?
I would probably choose fantasy. I think that with fantasy the possibilities are endless, and you can have so many different stories and characters and creatures and all that good stuff. I also love the adventure aspect of fantasy and I love a fast paced book, so I think I would have to choose fantasy!

If you could live in any book world created, which would you choose?
The obvious choice would be Harry Potter, who wouldn’t want to live in that magical world! I think it really is the ultimate choice!

What has been your best/favourite booktubing moment so far and why?
I would say my best booktubing moment was when I was watching a live chat that Heather from Bookables and I said hello during it and she said “Oh jhaughn18! I love your videos!” and I was so happy because she was the first booktuber I ever watched and she recognized me and it was just really cool. [Found the spot in the video for you Jamie-Leigh so you can watch it over and over again - Funnily enough this is actually how I found out about your channel :-) Jamie-Leigh's shout out from Heather aka Bookables].

Where do you store/show-off your books and how many do you own in total?
Jeff and I have 4 main bookshelves in our living room. They are packed as full as we can get them, we like to have them out in the open for everyone to see! We would really love to have a whole room that is just a library some day! We also have bookshelves in our bedroom, home office and dining room! I have over 400 books and Jeff has about the same! We haven’t counted them all recently! But never enough!

Where is your usual place to read and what would your dream reading place look like?
I usually read in bed, most days that’s the only time I have for reading! Someday I would love to have a huge porch with a nice coushiny chair or porch swing, that would be great for reading!

Lastly, which blogs/channels can we usually find you stalking when you're not creating content for your own channel?
I have a few booktubers that I watch and never miss a video! I love Bookables, PriceIsWong, bethjune327, xObsessedReaderx, BooksAreLovex3, KimberleysBookNook, JesseTheReader, LittleBookOwl, WhittyNovels, katytastic, MarlinElina and of course ColdTeaAndCrumbs! If I don’t have time to watch their videos I will always put them in my watch later folder so I never miss a video. All are fantastic in their own ways!
As for blogs, I really only check on Cold Tea and Crumbs, bookables (tumblr) and SpecialEdition87 (Tumblr) which is a friend of mine who works for Simon and Shuster, her blog isn’t all book related but I really enjoy what she puts up!
Thanks! :D Jamie-Leigh xoxo

A big thank you to Jamie-Leigh for taking the time to answer my questions. I would thoroughly enjoy reading on her porch in the summer. I also must check out Before I Go To Sleep as that sounds interesting! Thank you so much to Jamie-Leigh once again and don't forget to check out her channel or if you enjoyed this interview just click the red subscribe button above to have her videos show up in your YouTube subscriptions page.

Cas Lowood, armed with his late father's athame knife, kills ghosts. In Thunder Bay, Anna, forever 16, drips blood on her white dress from throat slit in 1958, and rips apart anyone who enters her house - except Cas. He makes new friends - high school queen Carmel, jock Will, admiring nerd Thomas and Tom's voodoo grandpa Morfran - to fight this demon.

Plot
I really liked the synopsis for this book previous to reading it. It sounded similar to the Supernatural television programme which I adore, so of course it's something that intrigued me.

Cas Lowood is a ghost hunter and supernatural killer, he is one of only a few with this ability and he is therefore tasked with carrying on his family's tradition after the murder of his father. His mother is a 'white witch' and helps Cas when needed by supplying healing lotions and other aids however she disagrees with his involvement in the family ghost hunting tradition.
After a tip from a close contact raises curiosity in Cas, he heads up to Thunder Bay, Canada - with his mother and all their possessions in tow - to hunt down the 'Anna' ghost and stop her gruesome murders. However when Cas meets Anna all is not the same as his typical ghost killings and he starts to wonder what about Anna's death was different?

Overall Impression
I was slightly disappointed in this story as the hype around this book from fellow booktubers was incredible. It was constantly described as chilling and scary but I actually found it bland in terms of it's supernatural content and the 'scary' bits were more gruesome that scary.
The best bits within this story were the aspects involving Anna. All the bits in between these scenes seemed irrelevant or long-winded for what was actually being discussed. The aspects involving Anna however were fantastic and I would have preferred discovering even more about her past and her life as a ghost.
I also didn't quite believe or feel for the romance within this novel which actually seemed secondary to the ghost hunting and father's death storyline.
The ending left me feeling bored. It all neatened up quite nicely and so knowing there is a second book in the series, I don't feel a rush to go out and read it. I would have preferred more of a cliffhanger ending which left me wanting more. I will be reading the second book however just not in a hurry.

Booktuber Interview #3 with Whytnee from BooksAreLovex3

Welcome back regular readers and a big hello to any new readers joining us. Welcome.

It's Wednesday which means it's time to have another Blogger/BookTuber Interview on Cold Tea and Crumbs. This fortnight I'm introducing you to Whytnee from BooksAreLovex3. Whytnee is such an enjoyable BookTuber to watch and every time I watch one of her videos I just smile, she's so friendly and enthusiastic that it spreads :-) I hope you guys enjoy Whytnee's answers to my questions and don't forget to check out her channel and say I sent you!

Hi Whytnee, please describe your channel and the type of books which you enjoy reading.
My channel is mostly a lot of tags and hauls. I notice that my reviews tend to ramble and they aren't watched as much, but there are just some books that you can't help but love so much you need to talk about it. My absolute favorite type of book is dystopian, but I read a lot of different genres. My friends call me an eclectic :)

What made you decide to start your channel and what are the main reasons you keep making videos?
I had an old channel by the name BibliomaniacWhyt and no one really watched my videos or understood the name, so I re-created myself a little over a year ago and boom, here I am. I made the channel (although I was apprehensive about it) because of Beth from BethJune327's persistent urging to do so. At the time we were our only 'reading friends' (as in we both read and wanted to talk about books but no one else we knew read). I'm so glad I did, I've met so many wonderful people :)

What is your favourite book?

My Favorite Book changes throughout the year. Currently I have two. Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte is the first- 1) because it is the first classic I've read that wasn't required for school, and 2) because I adore the story and Charlotte' Bronte's writing so much. It has got to be one of the better English classics of my collection so far. The second one is The Host by Stephanie Meyer because it doesn't really feel 'adult' to me. I know it's supposed to be her adult novel, but the story is so detailed, and the world building is so amazing, that it feels like a YA dystopian.

If you could read one genre for the rest of your life, which genre would you choose?
Oh wow this is a hard one. I can't choose just one. I guess if I had to it would be Dystopian because I find it fascinating that authors (along with many non writers or readers) seem to think the world is going to fall apart. I like to see how they think the issues will be resolved, when in reality only a handful of people would stand up for themselves. Personally I think mankind tends to deal with whatever lot they're issued, only a few persevere. I like the 'hope' Dystopians project for the future.

If you could live in any book world created, which would you choose?
I know most people would jump in and say Hogwarts or Camp Half Blood, but I think I would most likely choose a classic English novel such as Jane Eyre or something by Jane Austen. I love those books, being an Anglophile I'm a bit obsessed. I wouldn't choose a Dickens just because some of the conditions he writes about are just..well.. not exactly what I'd want to deal with. Give me a Mr. Darcy or Mr. Rochester any day :)

What has been your best/favourite booktubing moment so far and why?
I think my favorite booktube moment had to have been hitting 100 subscribers. I know that's a small number, but on my old channel I had at least 25 videos and less than 70 subscribers. The fact that 100 people liked me enough to subscribe without me asking was VERY flattering and it made me feel good about myself and my content. The funny thing is, I've 'grown' so much that watching my old videos now makes me wonder what it was about me that made them subscribe in the first place, haha. I just really appreciate all the people I've met and became friends with and I cannot wait to meet more and form new friendships.

Where do you store/show-off your books and how many do you own in total?
I have two tall 5shelf bookshelves in my room against one wall, and a short 3shelf bookshelf beside my bed.. and now after counting them all (which by the way thanks a lot for making me do so haha) I have 233 books on my shelves total. Not including my ebooks.

Where is your usual place to read and what would your dream reading place look like?

I usually read on the couch or in my bed. But I have to be sitting up or I'll fall asleep. I've read in the car, but I usually get car sick, so sitting somewhere is best. My ideal reading place would be a custom designed book nook. I've seen so many on pinterest that I'm determined to create one of my own when I buy my own home. I'd prefer something with a window, sunlight is the best, but this picture is amazing.

Lastly, which blogs/channels can we usually find you stalking when you're not creating content for your own channel?
I always check out your videos (once I heard you mentioned on a few channels I was hooked) but my other booktube favorites are BookswithDylan, KimberleysBookNook, Jhaughn18, and Kayla Campana (who is now a very good friend of mine, we text each other daily). But non booktube related channels I adore are of course VlogBrothers, but I also love Olan Rogers, Emma Blackery, and Big Cat Rescue (The giant cat videos are just irresistible)

___________________________________________________________________________________________

A big thank you to Whytnee for taking the time to answer my questions. I'm very sorry for making you count your books, Whytnee :-S You've introduced me to a couple of YouTubers that I was unaware and now thanks to you I subscribe to them. Thank you so much to Whytnee once again and don't forget to check out her channel or if you enjoyed this interview just click the red subscribe button above to have her videos show up in your YouTube subscriptions page.

Super Six Sunday - Most Original World Building

Hi guys. Did you know I've never done a Super Six Sunday post before!

I love reading these weekly posts on all the blogs that I follow but have never actually done one myself.  Seeing as though this weeks theme was 'Most Original World Building' Books, I couldn't help but complete my own post featuring my Top 6. I did however find it hard to just pick 6!

1
The Knife of Never Letting Go
Patrick Ness

The world building in this book is so original and is something I have never encountered in any other book! A world where men can hear each others thoughts and women are no longer around. When Todd encounters a girl from another planet he then releases that he cannot hear her thoughts and they embark on a great escape from the other men within Prentistown who have a great issue with women and power.

The cover opposite isn't the one I own however I love this cover so much more than the others because it coveys the story of the book so well. The only thing missing is 'The Noise' which is what is shown all over the other cover versions.

2
Wither
Lauren DeStefano

The world within Wither where women die at 20 and men die at 25 is absolutely scary. The book itself isn't a thriller or horror but the idea that if I lived within this book's world, I would be dead is horrifying. It's inescapable too as it is the fault of previous generations - they found a cure for cancer and other common diseases however the effects are now that new generations die so young.

Such a great read. I cannot wait to carry on with The Chemical Garden Trilogy by reading Fever this month.

3
Daughter of Smoke & Bone
Laini Taylor

Daughter of Smoke and Bone is not one of my favourite books however the world building of the Chimaera world opposite the real-world Prague and Marrakech was easily imaginable.

The story follows blue-haired Karou through her normal life at art school as well as her personal life living with the Chimaera. As we discover more of the magical world of the Chimaera, we soon realise that not is all simple for Karou and that external forces are concentrating hard to rid the world of the Chimaera and their magic.

4
Stitch
Samantha Durante

Image a world where you can be made to forget who you are - that's Stitch. This story was fantastic at creating a typical university/college environment in which Alessa is focusing on her studies and then she starts to encounter ghostly experiences. This however is all flipped when that world is discovered as false and the story is actually set within a dystopian world. To tell you anymore about this book would spoil it - just go read it, it's incredible.

5
Cinder
Marissa Meyer

Cinder although a story-retelling of Cinderella is nothing you've read before. Imagine a world set in the future where androids and robots co-exist with humans and there is another race which lives on the Moon named Lunars, whose Queen is adamant she will rule over Earth as well as the Moon. Such as fantastic book and loved the old decorative Turkish and Chinese style buildings blended with modern technology.

6
Vampire Academy
Richelle Mead

Not your typical vampire story. Guardians, good vampires and bad vampires are all in the mix and I love the vampires Russian/Eastern European heritage. Vampire Academy also introduces such strong aspects within its pages which I am so excited to explore further in the second book, Frostbite.

The Island - A Dystopian Novella | Book Review

'I walk toward the sea. The endless surface of the water extends to the horizon, whichever way I look.
Our world is small. We are on our own, and we only have ourselves to depend on. We rely on the Force deep within us, as taught to us by our forefathers.
If I were to walk westward from here, I would come across a barrier - the Wall. Behind it, there are Fools. At least, that's what everyone says.
I have never seen one.'
Leia lives on the Island, a world in which children leave their parents to take care of themselves when they are ten years old. Across this Island runs a wall that no one has ever crossed. The Fools living behind it are not amenable to reason - they believe in illusions. That's what The Book says, the only thing left to the Eastern Islanders by their ancestors. But when a strange man washes ashore and Leia meets a Fool face to face, her life will never be the same. Is what she and her friends believe about the Island really true?
Or is everyone in their world, in face, a Fool?

This was a book I badly wanted to put down and leave unfinished but my stubbornness stopped me. I have never not finished a book and I wasn't going to start now. Had this book been more than 138 pages I may have been more likely to put it down but I persevered and finished it.

The constant references to Stars Wars in this book made me loath it. I'm not a big Stars Wars fan on a good day but namedropping a Dark Father and constant talk of a never explained 'Force' made me bored out of my brain. At times when I became intrigued about the truth as to why these people were on these islands and why some wanted to leave and others did not, I was then quickly bored again by constant talk and non-answered questions. Even though this book was free on the Kindle, please don't waste your time or money (if there is a charge in your country), it's about 2-3 hours of reading time you'll never get back!
